Nicholas Cowdery AO QC FAAL was Director of NSW Public Prosecutions from 1994 to 2011. He has spent over 50 years in criminal justice as a prosecutor, defender, judge and teacher. He now teaches criminal law at the Universities of Sydney and of NSW and is engaged in many criminal law reform projects. He was President of the International Association of Prosecutors, inaugural Co-Chair of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association and President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties. He is a director of the Justice Reform Initiative.
He is the author of Getting Justice Wrong: Myths, Media and Crime, co-author with Rachael Jane Chin of Frank & Fearless, and author of many papers, most recently the author of Discretion in Criminal Justice, as well as articles and chapters on criminal justice matters. He comments publicly from time to time on criminal justice issues.
