Julie Janson

A Burruberongal woman of Darug nation, Julie is a novelist, playwright, artist and poet. She was co-recipient of the Oodgeroo Noonuccal Poetry Prize 2016 and the Judith Wright Poetry Prize 2019. Her novels are: The Crocodile Hotel, Cyclops 2015 and Benevolence, long listed for the NIB Award 2021. Her plays have been produced at Belvoir St Theatre, Sydney Opera House Studio, Phoenix Theatre, Arizona, Makassar Indonesia, Adelaide Festival Centre. Gunjies was nominated for an AWGIE Award and received a Highly Commended Award from the Human Rights Commission. Julie lived in remote Northern Territory Aboriginal communities in her early years as a teacher, where she began writing plays and making giant puppets, masks and costumes. She now lives in Moruya on the South coast of NSW.
