Barry Maitland was head of the architecture school at the University of Newcastle. The Marx Sisters, the first in his London-based Brock and Kolla crime novels, was published in 1994 and 13 more have followed in the series. He also wrote the Australian-based trilogy Crucifixion Creek, Ash Island and Slaughter Park, featuring Sydney homicide detective, Harry Belltree. He won the Ned Kelly award for best novel in 1996 and has been regularly shortlisted for the award.
